WATCH: Kei Nishikori Returns To Practice As Tennis Remains Cancelled

Japanese star Kei Nishikori has been on a pretty long break from tennis. Asia’s best export had been on the sidelines since sustaining an elbow injury at the US Open 2019. This had required a minor procedure.

Although at the time it looked like a minor issue, he had to miss major events like the Davis Cup, the inaugural ATP Cup and the Australian Open.

However, his fans might finally be hearing some good news. In a recent video released by the ATP Tour, Nishikori can be seen hitting some balls at practice. He looks in good shape and might finally be ready for some good tennis action.

Sadly for him, his return date has coincided with a major travesty for the tennis world. All ATP tennis events have been suspended for a period of six weeks due to the Coronavirus pandemic. What this means is that Nishikori will have to wait some more time before he finally hits the ground running.

“I’m coming back from zero” – Kei Nishikori

Nishikori faced a major setback recently. The Japanese star was supposed to make his long-awaited comeback during Japan’s Davis Cup tie against Ecuador, albeit behind closed doors due to the ensuing Coronavirus upheaval. However, he pulled out at the last moment.

He had revealed in an interview that his elbow was not that big of a concern anymore. Instead, he feels that the long period of rest had made his body incapable of an immediate return. Hence, he required more time to return from scratch.

“I’ve rested a long time and I’m coming back from zero. It’s sad, seeing the Australian Open and now skipping the Davis Cup, and other big tournaments are coming. Everything is going well but I couldn’t make it in time. I’m sure I will come back soon, hopefully in Miami this month or for the clay-court season, although it wasn’t possible this week.”

With the Miami Open called off and the initial portion of the clay season under threat, Nishikori has a long road ahead. We hope that he does well whenever the tennis season begins in full swing.
