As we try to keep up with the latest cancelations of various sporting events, tennis may have more grave news. According to Sportsmail, the 2020 Wimbledon Championships could very well be canceled in the light of the coronavirus outbreak across the globe.
The tennis season is currently suspended, with both Indian Wells and Miami Open getting canceled.
COVID-19 has absolutely wreaked havoc in the world this year. It is gradually forcing sporting events to be canceled one by one as the virus shows no signs of stopping. Barring a quick and miraculous containment of coronavirus, most sports’ seasons may have to be scrapped completely.
Organizers to cancel Wimbledon?
Tennis is very much in that boat, with two major events canceled this week.
And now, it looks like the Grand Slams may have to follow suit. The organizers of the Wimbledon Championships have reportedly hinted at canceling the event rather than hold it behind closed doors. They do not like the idea of hosting the tournament without spectators present to enjoy it.
Many sports continued with their schedules, playing matches behind closed doors. For instance, Serie A, the soccer league in Italy, did that in their last game week. However, it has since been suspended altogether.
While no Wimbledon would mean a rather bland time of the year for all tennis fans and indeed players, it could be a necessary step to bring the vicious outbreak under control. As of now, the situation looks dire enough to derail and cancel the entire remaining tennis season.
We will get a better idea about the possibility of at least the Grand Slams taking place after Roland Garros in April. However, whether the organizers are ready to carry on is just one side of the coin; players from various different countries may not be able to travel in the first place.
As you may have read already, many tennis players are stranded in Indian Wells, unable to go back home due to various border sanctions in place.
