The Tokyo Olympics 2020 was postponed until 2021 as the novel coronavirus wrought havoc in the sporting world. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is considering the tennis calendar significantly as the talks of finalizing the Tokyo Olympics dates next year begins.
The organizers are working closely with other sporting bodies to finalize a date for the opening ceremony of the 2021 Olympics. IOC is targeting a July-August window for the postponed Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the dates will be confirmed within a month.
Tokyo Olympics likely to open in July 2021
According to the reports of Japanese newspaper Yomiuri, IOC’s John Coates revealed that the new slot for the Games in Tokyo would need to fall between Wimbledon and US Open 2021.
The Wimbledon is scheduled to end on July 11, 2021. On the other hand, the main draw at the US Open 2021 will commence on August 30, 2021. Hence the Olympics will take place between between July 11 and August 30, 2021.
“We want to more or less finalize the dates in four weeks’ time,” Coates said as quoted by Yomiuri.

Earlier in a tough decision, IOC delayed the Games to next year. The organizers took this decision as it was not possible to shift the Summer Olympics later this year.
The postponement of the biggest sporting event of the world is certainly a huge blow for hosts Japan. The country nearly invested $12 billion in the run-up.
As per the earlier schedule, the 2020 Olympics was to take place between July 23 and August 8. It seems that IOC is aiming a similar date to its original date to start the Games next year. Only time will tell what decision IOC will take regarding the new dates of the Tokyo Olympics. However, we hope that it does not conflict with any other sporting authorities.
