Liverpool crash out of Champions League defence

Defending champions Liverpool have been knocked out of the Champions League, losing 4-2 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid in the last 16 after a 3-2 second-leg defeat at Anfield on Tuesday.

In a tale of two goalkeepers, the La Liga side's Jan Oblak showed why he is one of the world's best by single-handedly holding the hosts at bay in the second half as shots rained down on his goal with the tie level on aggregate at 1-1 after Georginio Wijnaldum's opener.

By contrast Adrian, the goalkeeper who did not have a club in the summer and who was standing in for the injured Alisson Becker, had a shocking nine minutes in extra time with his error leading to Marcos Llorente's goal after Roberto Firmino's first at Anfield since April had put Liverpool ahead in the tie for the first time.

The Spaniard then seemed slow to react to Alonso's long-range effort, which left Juergen Klopp's side needing two goals in the final 15 minutes.

For once Anfield could not deliver one of its famous comebacks as Klopp lost his first two-legged tie as Liverpool manager at the 11th attempt, with Alvaro Morata adding a third in the 120th minute.

Klopp was lost for words to describe how his side had lost.

"I'm searching for the right words to be honest," he told BT Sport. "The 90 minutes were exceptional.

"We shouldn't have conceded these kinds of goals. It's difficult to explain these goals to be honest.

"They beat us so that's how it is. We have to accept this. It doesn't feel right tonight, I realise I am a really bad loser. Especially when the boys put in such an effort in the game."

In Paris, Paris Saint-Germain beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 behind closed doors at the Parc des Princes to reach the Champions League quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

French champions PSG were bidding to overturn a 2-1 first leg defeat but had to do so without any fans after the stadium was closed as part of measures to tackle the spread of the new coronavirus.

World-record signing Neymar was heavily involved in the early stages for PSG and he broke the deadlock after 28 minutes when he headed home Angel Di Maria's corner.

PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas twice denied Dortmund's English forward Jadon Sancho before the French side doubled their lead on the night in first-half stoppage time.

Juan Bernat steered home Pablo Sarabia's low cross from the right to give Thomas Tuchel's side a vital second against his former team.

Roman Burki made a good save to stop Di Maria adding a third with a free-kick and Emre Can was sent off in the final stages for the frustrated Bundesliga side.

"We played like a team, reliable and together. We needed to show that," said PSG coach Thomas Tuchel.

"It was a good atmosphere in the bus when we arrived ... we were singing together in the bus. I wanted us to play with exactly this kind of energy."
