Anthony Joshua, the restored world heavyweight champion, has reclaimed three-quarters of the heavyweight pie but we are still no were close to identifying the best heavyweight in the world.
And now that the WBA, IBF and WBO champion is again in the Big Mix following the rematch win over Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia, it would be interesting to see if the match between Joshua and Fury will be pencilled in later this year.
For both the champs to win their immediate next fight is crucial as it will decide if we’re ever going to witness the biggest boxing showdown in search of the best world heavyweight champion.
Anthony Joshua has already triggered the potential battle against fellow Briton saying that Fury should “be careful what he wishes for.”
He further talked to Land Rover saying that “the fight can happen when Tyson Fury gets past his third match with Deontay Wilder and when I get past my next match with Kubrat Pulev.”
“If Fury wants that fight to happen, he’ll make it happen,” he added.
Before that Joshua-Fury fight could get inked, Joshua will have to first defend his reclaimed WBO belt against the 38-year-old Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev at Tottenham Hotspur stadium on June 20.
A fight that relatively seems a path to safer ground as Fury-Wilder III could go either way in hope that Wilder would come back strong this time without any excuses.
And if that happens then who knows we could forever be oscillating between Joshua and Fury as best world heavyweight judging their fight record.
But these are all variables and our immediate focus should be on their immediate fights.
Fury, for his part, earlier taunted Joshua this month saying that he was only holding on to his belts.
“He’s had two good fights in his career in my opinion, against Klitschko and Wilder and he’s managed to win them both so he’s on a high right now,” Joshua later said of Fury’s performance.
Fury came back strong in a rematch with Wilder and almost seemed so imperceptible on his foot that he stopped Wilder in the seventh round.
“But he has to be careful for what he wishes for because the young gunners are coming up and we’ll definitely take that Tyson Fury challenge with both hands,” Joshua added.
Earlier, Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, said that he’s ready to ink a deal with Fury if that’s what he wants.
