Formula 1 Team Principal Remains Sceptical Over Normalcy Being Restored to the Season

The opening 8 races of the 2020 Formula 1 season have been canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This led to Racing Point team principal Otmar Szafnauer being skeptical about when normalcy will be restored.

The top brass remains hopeful of a 15-18 race season once the global situation improves. To achieve this goal they have advanced the summer break from July to March. The decision will free up weekends in the middle of the year for the races to be accommodated.

Tough to say when Formula 1 will be back to normal

Szafnauer has termed the situation unprecedented with teams having no idea about what will be next. “Right now we simply cannot say with any degree of certainty when we’ll be back to normal,”

So many races have never been canceled in a single formula one season. The last time a single Formula 1 race was canceled was in Bahrain 2011. That race itself was the first Grand Prix cancelation in many seasons.

As a result of Grand Prix cancellations Formula, one decided that all teams will retain the same chassis for the upcoming season. Only McLaren who will switch engine suppliers are allowed to make “necessary changes” to their chassis. Szafnauer is even on board with Formula 1’s decision to delay the introduction of the 2022 technical regulations by a year. He says that this decision makes sense from a logistical and financial perspective.

Racing Point need to be in a position to compete

However, he emphasizes the need for his team to hit the ground running in their midfield battle once the season resumes. “We need to be in a position to compete- whatever the regulations.”

This is because the financial regulations will be in place from next year. As per these, teams will only be able to spend in the proportion of that they earn.“There’s still plenty of work ahead and we’ll be ready to tackle it when the time comes.” Racing Point F1 team is observing their 3-week summer break. They will reopen their factory on April 6teen and prepare for what can be salvaged of the 2020 season.

The 2020 Formula 1 season is set to flag off at Canada’s Gilles Villeneuve Circuit. However, nothing seems certain and is subject to the situation at the time. Teams and fans alike will hope that racing action resumes at the earliest.
